The standard time applicable in the District of Columbia shall be advanced by one hour from 2:00 a.m. on the second Sunday in March of each year until 2:00 a.m. on the first Sunday in November of each year and this time, known as daylight savings time, shall, during the period of the year for which it is applicable, be the standard time for the District of Columbia.

Historical and Statutory

Prior Codifications 1981 Ed., § 28-2711. 1973 Ed., § 28-2711. Effect of Amendments D.C. Law 19-45 substituted "2:00 a.m. on the second Sunday in March of each year until 2:00 a.m. on the first Sunday in November" for "2:00 AM on the last Sunday in April of each year until 2:00 AM on the last Sunday in October". Legislative History of Laws Law 5-133, the "District of Columbia Daylight Saving Time Act of 1984," was introduced in Council and assigned Bill No. 5-427, which was referred to the Committee of the Whole. The Bill was adopted on first and second readings on September 25, 1984, and October 9, 1984, respectively. Signed by the Mayor on October 25, 1984, it was assigned Act No. 5-191 and transmitted to both Houses of Congress for its review. Law 11-255, the "Second Technical Amendments Act of 1996," was introduced in Council and assigned Bill No. 11-905, which was referred to the Committee of the Whole. The Bill was adopted on first and second readings on November 7, 1996, and December 3, 1996, respectively. Signed by the Mayor on December 24, 1996, it was assigned Act No. 11-519 and transmitted to both Houses of Congress for its review. D.C. Law 11-255 became effective on April 9, 1997. Law 19-45, the "Daylight Savings Time Extension of Hours Act of 2011", was introduced in Council and assigned Bill No. 19-119, which was referred to the Committee on Human Services. The Bill was adopted on first and second readings on July 12, 2011, and September 21, 2011, respectively. Signed by the Mayor on October 11, 2011, it was assigned Act No. 19-175 and transmitted to both Houses of Congress for its review. D.C. Law 19-45 became effective on December 2, 2011.
